A poll was recently conducted of University of Maryland students to determine their awareness of awareness of the initiatives we are advocating. The data and conclusions we drew are presented below.
Distribution of Respondents |
Students were asked the following questions:
- Year?
- Major?
- Do you know what LEED Certification is?
- LEED Certification is a rating system that recognizes exceptionally Green buildings. With that in mind, please name any buildings on the UMD campus that you know/suspect are LEED Certified (without peeking at the next question).
- Have you ever spent significant time in any of these buildings? (They're all green buildings)
- Are you aware of a university initiative to renovate parking lots into open green spaces?
- Do you ever make use of any of these spaces?
- How often do you use any of the spaces listed above?
- What do you like about these spaces/What would you like to see in new ones?
- Would you be in favor of more spaces like these, in place of large parking lots?
The poll of students revealed that more than half of students at UMD
are unaware of LEED certification, or buildings on campus that have
attained this certification.
However, more than 60% of respondents knew or were able to guess at least one LEED certified building.
Other responses included:
- Kim Engineering Building
- CSPAC
- Comcast Center
- Van Munching
Green buildings people spent time in:
An overwhelming amount of students were ignorant of the initiative by the university to reclaim parking lots:
However, a great deal of respondents reported to having spent time in some of the spaces brought about by this initiative.
